From now until the end of 2007 Scouting will be busy with its one hundredth birthday. Monmouthshire will play its part.
Joining in with Eurojam
In 2005 Monmouthshire will send two leaders and at least ten Scouts to Eurojam. The places are already booked – all we need to do is find two leaders and plenty of Scouts. The deposit has been paid by the District, so participants won't have to pay the full cost. We’re looking for volunteers to lead our contingent by June 2004.
By the end of October 2004 we expect to have found at least ten Scouts and have started their training and fund-raising. We’re also looking for at least two people – a leader and an Explorer Scout or member of the Scout Network – to help promote the Centenary, develop our programme and manage the Eurojam contingent.
Before and after Eurojam we’ll be able to offer home hospitality to Scouts from abroad. So, we’re looking for Scouting families to look after guests for a few days at the end of July or middle of August. Every adult involved in home hospitality will need to complete the normal checks for adults involved with young people in Scouting.
Our next event will be EuroZone 2 on 10 April 2005, a training day for the contingent members and an opportunity for parents to talk with the leaders.
Future training days will be on: TBA
| Team half day in the morning (during EuroCamp + St George service) | |
| Team day | |
| Team day - final briefing, packing, BBQ for parents and supporters | |
| Gather prior to departure on 29th |
Please e-mail Jeremy White or David Goodall if you’re interested in any of these opportunities.
Ideas
We’re open to suggestions for the rest of 2005 and 2007. Ideas suggested so far include:
A satellite camp in south-east England from which we can easily run day trips to Eurojam. Probably starting and ending mid-week so that Beaver Scouts and Cub Scouts can join us for a day or two.
Overnight camps on the three highest points in Monmouthshire on 1 August 2005 and 2007 with a bugle call at sunrise to commemorate the anniversary of the opening of the very first Scout camp.
A major camp within Monmouthshire
Twinning with Scouts from towns and villages in Europe – exchanging with them or spending a week camping with them
St George’s day service in Tintern Abbey as we did for the 50th anniversary in 1957
Using one of the events to connect everyone in the District by string telephone and (with luck) setting a record
A District reunion for everyone we can find who has been a member of Scouting in Monmouthshire
Launching a printed District history (perhaps at the reunion)
Running Group birthday parties on each Group's official birthday (the anniversary of their registration with HQ)
Contacts
For a few months, David Goodall will help promote the Centenary events and link the District into the plans being made by Gwent and Scout HQ. But, we’re looking for someone to join the District Team to promote and organise the Centenary alongside the rest of the team. Please let us know if you’re interested whether you’re a leader (or ex-leader) Explorer Scout or Scout Network member.
